Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford began performing in her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days, Ford decided that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually joining with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies that were added to her show in the year 1996.
